About Ventoux

Nicknamed the Giant of Provence or Mont Chauve, Mont Ventoux is the highest point of the Monts de Vaucluse and the highest peak of Vaucluse, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region. Culminating at 1,910 meters, it is about 25 kilometers long and 15 kilometers wide. Eleven communes share the massif. The first real excursionist was Amélie de Sade, Marquise de Montbrun, who made several expeditions to the summit of Ventoux between 1783 and 1788. A television transmitter with a power of 195 kW was built at its peak in the 1960s. Since March 31, 2007, it broadcasts DTT. The radome installed in 1995 by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, protects a radar that ensures with nineteen other stations, the safety of the airspace. Today, in the jargon “I went to the observatory” means to have reached the summit of the Ventoux. On October 14, 1962, Julien Bouteille, a 70-year-old retired teacher, embarked on the road to the southern slope and made the ascent in 1 hour 54 minutes and 35 seconds, by bike without saddle.

Mont Ventoux is one of the greatest climbs in world cycling with riders visiting from all over the world every year to take it on. The mountain is situated in the heart of the Provence region in France and is heavily featured in the Tour de France.
